The UI was visually pleasant (somewhat futuristic) but not the most intuitive, I found navigating around slightly confusing in the beginning. One of the first more advanced 3rd party audio recording apps I stumbled upon after getting a smartphone was RecForge (Pro). ![]() RecForge II (Pro) UI of “RecForge II” while recording. ![]() ![]() Do note that most Android phones actually come with a native audio recording / voice memo app, some of which are quite good, but for the purpose of this article I will look at 3rd party apps only that are available for (almost) all Android devices. It will depend on your use case and personal taste which one qualifies as the best for you. I’ll have a look at six different apps of which each single one includes something interesting/useful. And while I’m mostly concerned with mobile videography on this blog, I think it can’t hurt to take a look at audio for once, particularly since field recorder apps can also be used as independent audio recorders with a lavalier mic in a video production environment. I chose to use the term “field recorder” as opposed to “audio recorder” since there’s a whole bunch of multi-track audio editing apps that also record audio. After starting to write a blog post about multi-track audio editing apps on Android, I figured it might be useful to do one on field recorder apps first as a precursor so to speak. – decoding : mp3, ogg, wav, wma, flac, opus, m4a, m2a, mp2, aac, m4v, mp4, mka, mkv, ac3, eac3, amr, 3gp, 3g2, avi, mov, asf, ogv. – encoding : mp3, m4a, ogg, wma, opus, flac and wav – Control RecForge from the notification bar – Different widgets size (one click to record) – Powerfull file manager (rename, delete, copy, move, sort files…) – Record in background even when the phone is locked – Use external microphone (3.5 jack : works with iRig Mic, iRig Cast, iRig Pre or RØDE smartLav+ microphones or requires a TRRS adapter. – Choose your input (front microphone or back microphone) – Decode audio from mp3, ogg, wav, wma, flac, opus, m4a, m2a, mp2, aac, m4v, mp4, mka, mkv, ac3, eac3, amr, 3gp, 3g2, avi, mov, asf, ogv, wmv, flv, f4v, webm – Convert your files “from” and “to” all available audio format (mp3, m4a, ogg, wma, opus, flac and wav) with all desired settings (sample rate, bite rate, mono/stereo, …) – Edit your recording to keep only interesting parts or make basic arrangement – Visualize audio signal (the only recorder on the Play store to display the right and left channels for stereo files) – Play, record, pause / resume, loop, convert, edit, concat, merge audio files, time strecth, adjust pitch tone, and playing rate … – Real-time recorder in mp3, m4a, ogg, wma, opus, flac and wav RecForge Pro owners : As long as a legit RecForge Pro version is installed on your device, you shouldn’t have the 3 minutes limitation. Simply press the pause button to continue recording or buy the pro version to remove this limitation. Records to mp3, m4a, ogg, wma, flac and opus formats are interrupted every 3 minutes (there is no limit for the wav format). – Archive it using cloud storage services or share it with your friends by mail, social networks, SoundCloud, WhatsApp … ![]() – Edit your audio files for ringtones, commentary, … – Time stretching with playing rate and pitch adjustment (to practice an instrument or transcribe lectures, …) – Play and use the loop feature for memorization, actor lines, bible memory, recitations, … – Live monitor in preview or record mod (need a headset) – Record meetings, rehersals, music learning, EVP, studio recording, … It allows to Record, Play, Edit and Share sounds, voices, notes, musics or any other audio media. RecForge II is a powerfull dictaphone (audio recorder & editor) for Android.
